Molly Segal | "Experimental Watercolor Techniques On Yupo"

"No medium does more work on it’s own than watercolor. I want to help students learn to be present with the painting process; sometimes guiding the paint and other times stepping back and letting the material interactions determine the next move. In this workshop, I share some of the watercolor techniques that have allowed me to loosen up as an artist and work less from a place of fear. Traditional watercolor can be fickle and unforgiving, but working on a plastic paper like yupo allows the artist to work subtractively, wiping away an entire painting at any point if desired. This can be wildly freeing and lead to a more expressive and intuitive way of approaching painting. I encourage experimentation, hard swings and misses, and resilience in art making." - Molly Segal

Molly Segal is from Oakland, CA. She received an MFA from The School of The Museum of Fine Arts in 2013. Her paintings have appeared in group exhibitions at Charlie James Gallery, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Zevitas Marcus, and Northeastern University. Her work and writing have been featured in publications including Full Blede, Venison Quarterly, Beautiful Decay, and Lapham’s Quarterly.  Segal taught painting at Tufts University and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts. She was recently a visiting artist at Chapman University and currently teaches at the Brentwood Art Center. She lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
